Newell Creek Canyon Nature Park
Portland, OR
Rating aMTB1
Description
Oregon Metro Regional Government’s first attempt at MTB specific directional gravity trails and they nailed it! If you live in the neighborhood, this is a perfect area to rack up some hot laps.
Staging
Flat, paved parking lot with accessible spaces and very clean vault toilets. There is a gate that used to be too narrow, but Metro recently widened for adaptive rider access.
Potential Issues
There are two bridges, one on Shady Lane and the other on Red Soil Roller that are wide enough but have round wood puncheons along both sides. My bike barely fits between them, but I usually just roll one wheel up on top of one of them. Metro plans to widen these.
Trails
Access Path (aMTB1) - Gravel road used to access the trailheads
Cedar Grove Trail (aMTB1) - Crushed aggregate surface. Plenty wide. Mainly used as return from gravity trails.
Heavy Nettle (aMTB1) - One of two gravity trails. Listed as blue, but i’d say its pretty green.
Red Soil Roller (aMTB1) - The green gravity trail. I like this one a little better. A bridge with round puncheons that may require a little problem solving.
Shady Lane (aMTB1) - Trail used to access the network. Some tight turns. A bridge with round puncheons that may require a little problem solving.
Tumble Falls Trail (aMTB1) - Mainly a return trail. Crosses Tumble Falls.
The Route
Mileage does not include multiple laps on gravity trails.
