Frank G. Bonelli Park

Description

Offering views of the Puddingstone Reservoir and surrounding mountains, Bonelli Park is a hidden secret in the San Dimas Valley. It is on the brink of becoming a dream destination for adaptive mountain bikers. With a few key improvements, it has the potential to serve as a model for inclusive trail systems that benefit all riders—adaptive and able-bodied alike.

Currently, much of the park is characterized by unsustainably steep trail grades. These steep sections create significant barriers not only for adaptive riders—particularly those using front-wheel-drive, delta-style bikes—but also for beginner and intermediate users.

Signage throughout the park is another critical area for improvement. While the design of existing signs is visually appealing, the information they provide is outdated and inconsistent with the current system map. Trail names often do not match those on the map, and signage is sparse, especially at key junctions. This inconsistency poses a safety concern, as riders—particularly those unfamiliar with the park or using adaptive equipment—may inadvertently find themselves on trails that exceed their ability level or lead them away from accessible routes.

The route outlined below is designed to bypass obstacles and trail sections that may pose difficulties for adaptive riders, while still offering a thorough tour of the area and featuring some of the best trails. A support rider is highly recommended.

Staging

I suggest staging from the main parking lot off Eucalyptus Park Road, where you’ll find plenty of marked spaces and running water facilities. To skip the day-use fee, you can stage from the park-and-ride lot off Via Verde, across the highway—just note that there are no facilities there. If you’re camping at the RV park, you can join the route via the East Shore Paved Path.

Trails

Due to the area’s steep grades, all trails are rated aMTB2, meaning a support rider is recommended. However, adaptive riders using rear-wheel drive should be able to complete the featured route below independently. Paved pathways are all rated aMTB1.
