DEAD HORSE POINT

Moab, UT

Ratings: aMTB1-3

Description

This area is kind of known as the mellow area, but don’t be fooled. It has its fair share of potential challenges and technical terrain. What it definitely has is unreal views! If you camp at the Deadhorse State Park, you can ride right out of camp onto the trail.

Staging

There is a paved parking lot at the main trailhead. This is also the parking lot for the Visitors Center which is open daily from 0900-1700. They have two handy-man parking spots and assuming they have running water restroom facilities. There is also a 1/4 mile paved scenic pathway out of the Visitors Center.

Camping

There are couple handi-man sites at the Wingate Campground, but I am told they are no different, simply closer to the restroom. Sites are paved and have electrical. Each has a picnic table under a covering. I was able to get around fine but larger chairs might have had an issue getting all the way around the table at my site. My site was also pretty small. I had to park to one side and could not access the passenger side of my car. Restrooms are clean and big with hot water, but no showers. There is a water fill but it closes seasonally. I had to fill water in the sink. I camped at the Kayenta Campground and its a little hilly. This was tough for pushing a manual chair with my lap loaded up with water bottles. I recommend to booking a site close to the restrooms. Campsites can be reserved at Reserve America or by calling 800-322-3770.

Trails

🟢 Intrepid (aMTB1+) - A quick 3/4 mile jaunt to the lookout and connection with Big Chief.

⚫️ Great Pyramid (aMTB3) - The trail itself is pretty much aMTB1, but there are two steep ledgy sections where most riders will need help and one semi off-camber slick rock section where some riders will need a spot. You could forego these spots by taking Raven Roll instead of Great Pyramid and linking to Big Chief via the northern section of Great Pyramid, but I did not ride this section and not sure how it is AND you would miss the amazing views.

🔵 Big Chief (aMTB2) - This is where most of the fun is. There is an extremely fun ledgy DH section (see video below). Suspension highly recommended. At the bottom of that section and along the traverse north, there are two slightly off-camber sections where some riders will need a spot.

🟢 Raven Role (aMTB1+) - Adaptive riders should have no problem at all on this trail. Its wide open and mostly downhill back to the trailhead.

+ Changes the word most to all on the rating (EX: aMTB1 - Most riders will not need support vs aMTB1+ All riders will not need support.)
